Introduction

The Preamble sets out the main objectives (goals) that the Constitution aims to achieve for the people of India.

These objectives guide the State in making laws and policies and ensure a fair and just society.


Meaning / Definition

Objectives enshrined in the Preamble refer to the key goals such as justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.

These objectives define the purpose of the Constitution and the values it seeks to promote.


Modes or Types

Justice (Social, Economic, Political)

  • Social Justice – Equal treatment of all people and removal of discrimination (unfair treatment) based on caste, religion, or status
  • Economic Justice – Fair distribution of wealth and equal pay for equal work
  • Political Justice – Equal participation in political life, including voting rights

Liberty (Freedom)

  • Freedom of thought, expression, belief, faith, and worship

  • Includes:

    • Negative liberty – Freedom from unnecessary interference by the State
    • Positive liberty – Freedom to develop one’s abilities
  • Protected under:

    • Article 19 (freedom of expression)
    • Articles 25–28 (freedom of religion)

Equality (of Status and Opportunity)

  • All persons are equal before the law

  • No discrimination based on religion, race, caste, sex, or place of birth

  • Key provisions:

    • Article 14 – Equality before law
    • Article 15 – Prohibition of discrimination
    • Article 16 – Equal opportunity in public employment
    • Article 17 – Abolition of untouchability
    • Article 18 – Abolition of titles

Fraternity (Brotherhood)

  • Promotes a feeling of unity and brotherhood among citizens

  • Ensures dignity (self-respect) of every individual

  • Supports unity and integrity of the nation

  • Reflected through:

    • Single citizenship
    • Freedom of movement and residence

Practical Example

If a person is denied a job only because of caste, it violates equality. If someone is stopped from expressing opinions freely, it affects liberty. These objectives help courts and the government ensure fairness.
